Film Stock: Ilford HP5 Plus

Camera: Canon F1 & Ricoh GR1

Field Notes: First off, I might be cheating here: let me just say these are selects from two cameras being shot side by side with the same film stock. The brief for the shoot was to capture street portraiture of Mikey wearing our new Zouk frame that he helped design for RAEN as a part of our Zafrique Ensemble. The imagery needed to be candid with a touch of an editorial feeling, portraying Mikey in a more urban environment than you typically see him in.

The Canon F1 is a fantastic little workhorse that paired with a standard 50mm lens that can be worked slower and more intentionally while still being discreet on the street, while the Ricoh GR1 lets me sneak in and pop off a more candid moment with fantastic optics, reliable fill flash, and wider 28mm filed of view. It’s a great combo punch. My copy of the GR1 is hanging on by a thread, its constantly eating film, LCD is basically gone at this point, and a plate on the back is being held in place with strategically placed gaffers tape, hope and a prayer. The day it kicks the bucket will be a sad, sad day.

Film was developed at North Coast Photo and scanned at home using my Fujifilm X-Pro3 on a Negative Supply rig. Raw files were processed through the incredible Negative Lab Pro via Lightroom.
